Enterprise (Holistic) Asset Tracking & Management Printer Friendly version
Management of assets can mean different things to different people.
For example, some may simply want to easily identify & track assets (such as computers & office furniture) and associate them with a location, while others may want to record some assets GPS coordinates along with comprehensive details on the assets condition (such as a remote pump).
Comware has a huge range of products that can make all this possible & some of the basics are discussed below.
Labels are the weakest link in any barcode system, so it is important not to compromise on quality. Asset labels should have high quality, long lasting adhesive or be supplied with holes for tagging or mechanical fixing and be made from durable materials such as laminated paper, plastic or metal.
These usually have a text heading (normally company name although sometimes "Property of"), barcode and possibly a logo if the label size permits.
We can supply special blank asset label stock, label printers and/or software should you prefer the flexibility of producing your own labels.
R.F.I.D. Labels or Tags can be used in addition to, or instead of barcodes if for example:
~Automated tracking and/or security is required. (Ask us about Real Time Location Systems)
~Environmental conditions are extremely harsh
~Barcodes cannot be placed in easily accessible places
While the most common method of attaching barcode or RF labels and tags is using self-adhesive materials this is not always suitable or possible - it must be reasonably quick, easy and permanent!
Other methods include:
Plastic or wire cable ties
2 part epoxy adhesive
Silicon or similar waterproof products
Key tags
Rivet or screws

Portable Data Collection Terminals or hand-held computers can be used for recording new asset details, asset audits (stock-takes) & some can store the entire asset database.

Asset software can be as simple as an Excel spreadsheet or a simple database that contains basic asset information (such as Asset No., a brief description, Asset location)
There are many "off the shelf" packages available, although custom databases are also popular.
At the upper end of the scale, feature rich databases are available which can maintain not only an assets physical details but also depreciation/financial information, images, asset maintenance/parts/consumables, purchasing, fault logging plus comprehensive reporting.
