Barcode Scanners (Bar code Readers)

The range of barcode scanners available today is vast and includes hand held scanners, hands free scanners, mobile or cordless scanners, memory scanners, as well as fixed position scanners for automation applications. The majority of them are used for retail Point of Sale (POS), but many are used in libraries, video stores, warehouses, manufacturing, freight companiesbanks and government.

Hand-held Scanners

Typically these are barcode scanners with a cable connected to a PC (desktop or laptop) but some are cordless and there are even memory options.
For portable barcode readers or refer to Data Collectors or barcode enabled Mobile Computers. 

Hands-Free Scanners

While these scanners can be just hand-held scanners in a stand, some are specifically designed to sit on top of
(or be built into) a counter or desk typically for retail or library use.

Fixed Position (Industrial Automation) Scanners

A Fixed Position / Fix Mounted Scanner is a bar code reading device that is usually attached or incorporated into another device to read bar codes automatically without human intervention. Multiple devices are used for high volume applications like luggage or pacel sorting.

Many use laser beams but increasingly camera based scanners are being used.
